Edinburgh is one of the most distinctive and widely recognised cities in the world. Even people who have never been anywhere near Scotland will have formed impressions of the city based on a range of sometimes clichéd but usually attractive and positive images.
The great thing about Edinburgh is that the reality surpasses your expectations. Two things usually come as a surprise to first time visitors. The first is that this is a city in three dimensions. It is built on and around hills, and the way Edinburgh grew leads to surprising changes in level at every turn. The second is the compact nature of the city. The centre of Edinburgh is small enough to be explored on foot, which is by far the best way to get to know it.
Edinburgh's not just about grand streets, history and culture, though: it's a vibrant, bustling city in its own right. As a busy student town, its nightlife is positively jumping and the bars and clubs mix with a full complement of outstanding restaurants, right across the city.
But the city really comes into its own with a couple of major highlights on the calendar. The summer's Edinburgh Festival and the Fringe obviously stand out. Then there's 'Hogmanay' (the city's New Year's celebrations), an explosion of fireworks, pipe bands and wild partying.
All in all, with such a staggering selection of things to see and do, it isn't hard to see why it's regarded as one of the great backpacking destinations of the world.
But Scotland doesn't begin and end with Edinburgh. As well as the country's spectacular scenery, there are a number of other outstanding travel destinations.
Glasgow:
Scotland's largest city and in many people's eyes, its most enjoyable. Vibrant nightlife and great
shopping are perfectly offset by many fantastic museums and galleries in one incredibly vital
package.

Inverness: The
Capital of the Highlands and Scotland's fifth city, Inverness is a friendly place. As well as a
wide range of attractions in its own right, Inverness is the gateway to Scotland's magnificent
North West Highlands.

Aberdeen: Often
called the Granite City for reasons that are obvious from the moment you arrive, Aberdeen is a
bustling thriving place that has reinvented itself in recent years and has a great deal to offer
visitors in its own right, as well as being a key departure point for the Northern Isles.
